St. Peter To Rot

St. Peter To Rot was a Catholic catechist, devoted husband, father, and martyr from Papua New Guinea who courageously defended his faith during World War II.

Born in 1912 in Rakunai, on the island of New Britain, Peter was the son of a respected village chief. Raised in a devout Catholic family, he demonstrated a strong commitment to prayer and service from an early age. In 1930, he began training as a catechist with the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart and later returned to his village to teach the faith and care for the sick.

In 1936, Peter married Paula Ja Varpit, and together they raised a family rooted in prayer and Christian values.

When Japanese forces occupied New Britain in 1942 and imprisoned the missionaries, Peter assumed responsibility for helping his community remain faithful. Despite restrictions on Christian worship, he continued organizing prayer gatherings, teaching the faith, and encouraging others to trust in God.

Peter also courageously defended the sanctity of marriage, opposing efforts by the occupying authorities to permit polygamy. His refusal to abandon Catholic teachings led to his arrest and imprisonment.

In 1945, Peter was killed while imprisoned by Japanese authorities. He was remembered as a martyr who willingly gave his life rather than compromise his faith.

Beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1995 and canonized by Pope Leo XIV in 2025, St. Peter To Rot remains a powerful example of Christian courage, devotion to family, and steadfast faith in the face of persecution.
