St. Daria

Feastday: October 25

There is very little known about them. Chrysanthus was an Egyptian, son of a Patrician, Polemius. He was brought to Rome from Alexandria during the reign of Numerian, and despite the objections of his father, who had brought him to Rome, was baptized by a priest named Carpophorus. Chrysanthus refused is father's attempts to get him married, finally married Daria, a Greek and a priestess of Minerva, converted her, and convinced her to live with him in chastity. When they converted a number of Romans, Chrysanthus was denounced as a Christian to Claudius, the tribune. Chrysanthus' attitude under torture so impressed Claudius that he and his wife, Hilaria, two sons, and seventy of his soldiers became Christians, whereupon the Emperor had them all killed. Daria was sent to a brothel, where she was defended by a lion, brought before Numerian, who ordered her execution, and was stoned and then buried alive. When several followers of Daria and Chrysanthus were found praying at their crypt, among them Diodorus, a priest, and Marianus, a deacon, they were all entombed alive. Their feast day is October 25.

As a married couple, they BOTH took the vows of chastity. This is a very confusing concept to most people except those who took vows of chastity as clergy. We, as modern day people, should understand that the vows of marriage are very sacred. We vow to love each other, forsaking all others, not covet another's spouse and accept children as a sign of our love for each other. I chose Saint Daria as my confirmation name in 1974. At the tender age of 15 years old, being a virgin girl was a conviction that I stood by till I married in 1978. My husband was also a virgin man and that was the gift we shared and continue to share as we have now been married 33 years, raised two children and enjoy our vows to this very day. I took my marriage vows seriously then, and will remain faithful in the love of my husband till death us do part.
THIS is the message that St. Daria sent as she and her husband are the patron saints of chastity.

St. Daria, pray for all women who desire to live chaste lives. Give us the virtues of modesty, humility. Pray for all married couples, whose witness to the Sacrament of Matrimony is Christ Himself. Amen.

Are readers allowed to edit articles or suggest they be edited? Because this one needs it. Too many spelling and grammatical mistakes. Also, I thought it was about someone else. There is no mention of the Saint this page is devoted to until the last paragraph.

I am always moved by the depth of commitment and actions by the early Christians. I wonder how many today would 'walk that walk'? AND be willing to be stoned to death. I think Christianity has become pretty tame -- by the blood of the martyrs.

I pray for the grace of that sort of commitment and depth for myself and the whole body of Christ....catholic and otherwise.
