St. Aidan

St. Aidan

St. Aidan

Feastday: August 31
Died: 651

Monastic founder, bishop, and miracle worker known for his kindness to animals. Known as Edan, Modoc, and Maedoc in some records, Aidan was born in Connaught, Ireland. Tradition states that his birth was heralded by signs and omens, and he showed evidence of piety as a small child. Educated at Leinster, Aidan went to St. David monastery in Wales. He remained there for several years, studying Scriptures, and his presence saved St. David from disaster. Saxon war parties attacked the monastery during Aidan's stay, and he supposedly repelled them miraculously. In time, Aidan returned to Ireland, founding a monastery in Ferns, in Wexford. He became the bishop of the region as well. His miracles brought many to the Church. Aidan is represented in religious art with a stag. He is reported to have made a beautiful stag invisible to save it from hounds.

I would like to purchase an ordinary medal of St. Aidan for my Grandson's baptism, but am having no luck whatsoever. I live in Northumberland.

Born in St Aidans wayand first to be baptised at the then new St Aidans church of England I was delighted to find he is a patron saint of animals.

I named my son for St. Aidan. I grew up in the North East of England near Newcastle. My Catholic middle school was divided into four houses for intramural sports and academic competition; Aidan, Bede, Cuthbert, and Oswald. There are many Celtic Christian sites in the North East that are now relatively obscure. Jesmond Dean has a small rock outcropping in a stream that was an early pilgrimage site. Durham Cathedral houses the tomb of St. Cuthbert. There is a sacred spring in Durham, doubtless an extremely old religious site, that was also asociated with St. Cuthbert.

In the "National Proper for Ireland," published by the Irish Catholi Bishops' Conference in 2007, the feast day for St. Aidan is given as January 31.

I believe St. Aidan's feast day was August 31, not January as posted on this site. Thank you
