St. Cornelius
Cornelius whose feast day is September 16th. A Roman priest, Cornelius was elected Pope to succeed Fabian in an election delayed fourteen months by Decius' persecution of the Christians. The main issue of his pontificate was the treatment to be accorded Christians who had been apostasized during the persecution. He condemned those confessors who were lax in not demanding penance of these Christians and supported St. Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage, against Novatus and his dupe, Felicissimus, whom he had set up as an antibishop to Cyprian, when Novatus came to Rome. On the other hand, he also denounced the Rigorists, headed by Novatian, a Roman priest, who declared that the Church could not pardon the lapsi (the lapsed Christians), and declared himself Pope - the first antipope. The two extremes eventually joined forces, and the Novatian movement had quite a vogue in the East. Meanwhile, Cornelius proclaimed that the Church had the authority and the power to forgive repentant lapsi and could readmit them to the sacraments and the Church after they had performed proper penances. A synod of Western bishops in Rome in October 251 upheld Cornelius, condemned the teachings of Novatian, and excommunicated him and his followers. When persecutions of the Christians started up again in 253 under Emperor Gallus, Cornelius was exiled to Centum Cellae (Civita Vecchia), where he died a martyr probably of hardships he was forced to endure.

My wife, Doris, is suffering from tinnitus and would like to know if there is a particular prayer to St. Cornelius or any other saints for the healing of her ear problem.
Thank you and God bless you.

I think St. Cornelius was a great and wise pope and an excellent example of how the Catholic Church has fought so persistently and bravely against so many heresies through the centuries, so that the authentic truth of our Faith would never be lost.
Thank you for sharing of Saint Cornelius with your biography. It gives deep expression of Saint Cornelius as a model of charity and mercy. Pray, Saint Cornelius, for a special mercy to have my dog returned home to us. He was sheltered while we needed to find a home, and our new landlord is not allowing us to take him back. Saint Cornelius, I know how many animals pass through time in shelters waiting for active family lives. Your beautiful life in exile brought sadness to my heart, and I felt a special hope to pray to you for our dog, Onyx, and for all animals. God Bless all.
Although I am a catholic I was knowing almost nothing about many saints. Then now I am happy about ewtn program like this. Also need to tell there are few chances in asian new generation to learn about our saints.please arrainge something to make success.Because learning about saints to children is more important.
Thanks to William Bailey for the prayer in his comment box. Grateful to know more about the saints about whom not much is known or written. I thank you St. Cornelius, for you kind and merciful intervention of behalf of all lax Catholics. Your love and mercy is much greater than the arrogant unforgiveness of Novatus. Pray for all those baptised Catholics who have strayed away from the Holy Sacraments. Look lovingly on mothers who are eagerly and patiently awaiting their return to Jesus. Protect all young Catholics who stray away from Christ, in their wild, teenage years, attracted by drugs, heavy metal music, alcohol and permissive sex. On this your feast day beloved St. Cornelius hear our supplications and grant us your Grace through Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen
This passage is some-what confusing with all the language but "Why did Saint Cornelius become a saint e.g what were his miracles and so on."
What were the years of his life? That would have been helpful in this article. Also, did you know that saturday night live did a character on a sketch of St. Cornelius?
why is st. Cornelius a saint?
Books and statues of saint Cornelius are not common,i called Cornelius and i want to learn more about his life
i love the passage
this is not helpful because it doesn't even give his BIRTHDAY!!!
Where can I find a St. Cornelius Statue ?
Here's one by Dom Prosper Gueranger, OSB to Sts. Cornelius and Cyprian. (Bishop of Carthage, Cyprian, had written to Pope Cornelius to console him in exile, and both were martyred on Oct 18.)
"Holy Pontiffs, united now in glory as you once were by friendship and in martyrdom, preserve within us the fruit of your example and doctrine. Your life teaches us to despise honors and fortune for Christ's sake, and to give to the Church all our devotedness, of which the world is unworthy. May this be understood by those countless descendants of noble races, who are led astray by a misguided society. May they learn from you gloriously to confound the impious conspiracy that seeks to exterminate them in shameful oblivion and enforced idleness. If their fathers deserved well of mankind, they themselves may now enter upon a higher career of usefulness where decadence is unknown, and the fruit once produced is everlasting. Remind the lowly as well as the great in the city of God, that peace and war alike have flowers to crown the soldier of Christ: the white wreath of good works is offered to those who cannot aspire to the rosy diadem of martyrdom (Cyprian Epist. viii. Ad martyres et confessores). Watch, O Cyprian over thy Church of Carthage, now at length renewing her youth..."
St. Cornelius is the patron saint of hearing ailments. Do you know of any prayers to him that i can give my mother who has hearing loss in both ears? Thank You.
