King of Wessex from 688-726 and one of the most capable of the Anglo-Saxon monarchs. He established the see of Sherborne, promoted the Christian faith, and issued a code of laws fro the West Saxons which was preserved as an appendix to the famed law code of King Alfred the Great. He also restored Glastonbury Abbey which became a religious center fro the country. As was the regular custom in that era, in 726 he retired and went with his wife, St. Ethelburga, to Rome where he spent his remaining days as a monk. He reputedly founded an English school in Rome.
