St. Alfred the Great

St. Alfred the Great

St. Alfred the Great

Feastday: October 26
848 - 899

King of Wessex, scholar, and renowned Christian monarch. Alfred was born in 849, the fifth son of the Wessex king. During a journey to Rome in 853, he was accepted as a godson by Pope Leo IV . He was a great scholar, translating classics for his people, and early on seemed destined for a career in the Church. Instead, he became king and was forced to spend most of his reign in conflict with the Danes who were then threatening England. His work as a patron of the arts, literature, and especially the Church made him a beloved figure in England.

I suggest that you add to your "Further Reading" list the following: Smyth, Alfred P. King Alfred the Great. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1995. It is the best biography of Alfred I've ever seen, and Smyth is "the acknowledged living scholar" on Alfred!! This book will be the definitive work on Alfred the Great for generations, I suggest.

I agree it is a good article although it needs more information about why he is the patron Saint of crohns disease.

I agree. This is a good article but it definetly needs to have more information because it is very important. For example I think it should tell us that he was indeed a great King but wasn't always there to help on the battlefeild due to his Crohns disease. That is very important information. So is the fact that he was confirmed at the age of 5 in Rome by Pope Leo IV. This is the time when he was aninted as King.

I liked this artical but it could use more on St Alfred. My Great- Grandfather was named Alfred so I wish it could have more.
