We ask you, urgently: don't scroll past this
Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >
Response to Pope's Call for Greater Use of Spiritual Exercises Facilitated Through Daily Catholic Me
FREE Catholic Classes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MEDIA ADVISORY
Based primarily on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, the website Silent Insight - Daily Catholic Meditations for Faith, Listening, and Peace (www.SilentInsight.com) provides a simple prayer format with a daily meditation delivered each morning via email and/or RSS feed. The site helps one to respond to the recent call from Pope Benedict XVI for the greater use of spiritual exercises.
Alpharetta, GA (JUNE 1, 2008) - In our ever busy and complicated world, the recently launched website Silent Insight (www.SilentInsight.com) simplifies payer through the delivery each morning of a daily Catholic meditation within a simple prayer format via email and/or RSS feed. Based primarily upon the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius, the meditations are concise, understandable and invite the person praying to place themselves in the circumstances of the meditation.
The meditations also provide a means to help respond to the February 28, 2008 call from Pope Benedict XVI urging greater use of the spiritual exercises. The Holy Father reiterated that the use of the spiritual exercises provide a "strong experience of God, awakened by listening to his word..." The site and related meditations do not replace, but rather serve as a supplement to an actual silent retreat based on the spiritual exercises. The Holy Father described such retreat and the resulting encounter with God as offering the possibility of "intense listening to his Word in silence." The Holy Father goes on to indicate that "A good course of Spiritual Exercises contributes to renewing in those who participate in it a joy of and taste for the Liturgy, in particular of the dignified celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours and above all, the Eucharist."
Subscriptions to the daily meditations are free.
The simple prayer format is as follows:
Be Still | Read | Chew On It | Listen | Dialogue | Close With Praise and Thanks
The meditations come primarily in two forms: scripture excerpts and adaptations from the spiritual exercises.
An example meditation from a scripture excerpt includes Matthew 8:23-27 in which Jesus is sleeping on a boat during a violent storm while his disciples are scared. Jesus goes on to calm the sea and all are amazed. The person praying is invited to put themselves in that circumstance and sense what it was like to see Jesus calm the seas. Other similar meditations might include the feeling of being healed by Jesus, going from blindness to sight.
An example meditation as being adapted from the spiritual exercises includes the "Principle and Foundation" from the exercises in which one is invited to consider an ordered set of values and meditate such insight as everything having the potential to draw us closer to God and hence provide a more loving response to our life forever with God.
The site was created by Brian Brown, a parishioner at St. Brigid Catholic Church in Alpharetta, GA and active volunteer with the St. Ignatius House Retreat Center in Atlanta GA. "Through years of attending silent retreats at the Ignatius House, listening to various spiritual talks, and completing the 19th annotation (the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius in Daily Life), I compiled notes and material that I found were very useful to review periodically. Accordingly, I felt a call to put these notes and material in a format for which others and I could frequently refer to and/or use as a daily meditation."
Additionally, "I've had the good fortune of getting first hand wisdom and meditation insights from my wife, children, good friends, and many others."
As a supplement to the daily meditations, the site includes a compilation of original articles such as the following:
- The Four Cornerstones of Drawing Closer to God
- A Simple Prayer Format
- Consider a Silent Retreat
Links are also provided to book recommendations and other sites.
Created in November 2007 as beta site for posting the meditations, the site is now complete and has approximately 75 subscribers through word of mouth and search engine results.
