Dominican University Presents Series on Common Good

RIVER FOREST, IL (DECEMBER 17, 2007) - As primary elections capture our nation's attention, Dominican University's Siena Center enters the public discussion with its spring series, "The Common Good." A roster of exceptional speakers, capped by Washington Post columnist E. J. Dionne, will explore how people of faith make political decisions, what we mean by "the common good," and how we can make our political voices heard.

Opening the series is Albino Barrera, OP, who addresses "The Common Good? Responsibility for the Public Square" on Wednesday, February 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Priory Campus, 7200 W. Division St., River Forest. A Dominican friar, professor of economics and theology at Providence College, and author of numerous books including Globalization and Economic Ethics, Barrera will explore contemporary understandings of the common good, highlighting foundations drawn from Thomas Aquinas and Catholic social thought. He will reflect on how to take a proactive stand on difficult social issues, a task essential for responsible action.

On Wednesday, March 12 at 7:30 p .m. in the Priory auditorium, University of Notre Dame law professor Vincent Rougeau will present a program titled "The Common Good, Faith, and Global Citizenship." The author of Christians in the American Empire: Faith and Citizenship in the New World Order, Rougeau will consider a common good that is both global and local. He will examine what it means to be part of faith-based traditions that tackle difficult issues such as poverty relief, immigration, globalization and racial discrimination.

The third lecture in the series, "Pursuing the Good We Share in Common," will be held on Wednesday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Priory auditorium. Kristin Heyer, assistant professor of theological studies at Loyola Marymount University and author of Prophetic and Public: The Social Witness of U.S. Catholicism, will share concrete examples of social advocacy by Catholic-based organizations.

For the final lecture of the series, E. J. Dionne will consider what the common good means to politicians, political observers and ordinary citizens in "The Common Good: Will We Ever Hear About It in a Campaign?" on April 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division St., River Forest. In addition to writing his Washington Post column, Dionne is a senior fellow at The Brookings Institution, professor at Georgetown University, a frequent television commentator and the author or co-author of over a dozen books, included the spring release, Souled Out: Faith and Politics After the Religious Right. Along with sharing reflections from his decades of observing the national political scene and his recent work on religion and American politics, Dionne will propose ways that the common good offers an agenda for political life and hope for the future.
