The Mortel Family Charitable Foundation Announces Development of Catholic School in Haiti

THE MORTEL FAMILY CHARITABLE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES DEVELOPMENT OF CATHOLIC SCHOOL IN HAITI New school to serve poorest boys and girls in St. Marc, Haiti Hershey, PA, April 23, 2001 -- The Mortel Family Charitable Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to bringing new life to the small nation of Haiti, announced today the development of Les Bons Samaritains, a Catholic school dedicated to educating and feeding the poorest children in St. Marc, Haiti. The school will be completed in the spring of 2001 and will begin teaching students in the fall of 2001. One of every five children in Haiti dies before the age of five of infectious diseases and malnutrition. Of the survivors, only 20% attend school due to the scarcity of schools and the lack of basics such as shoes and clothing. Les Bons Samaritains was conceived to address this pervasive problem in Haiti and to provide the children of St. Marc with a strong foundation and a new sense of hope. Les Bons Samaritains will be directed by a principal from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny in the Diocese of Gonaives in Haiti. It will enroll 60 new students per year. Construction of the school is made possible through individual contributions to date and a $450,000 grant from Food for the Poor. The school is the dream of Haiti native Rodrigue Mortel, M.D., president of the Foundation and associate dean and director of the Penn State University Cancer Center. "Without an education, I would never have risen from the poverty of Haiti to become a physician," states Dr. Mortel. "I strongly believe that no one is successful until he takes someone else along. This school is a chance for us to nurture needy children and give them a viable chance to reach their goals and dreams." The 13,000 square foot building is located three blocks from the most deprived area of St. Marc. It will consist of numerous classrooms, a large multipurpose room, a cafeteria, a library, and a small administrative wing. Children will join the school at the age of 4 for pre-kindergarten and will continue through grade 12. They will wear a uniform, attend classes for a half-day session and enjoy a substantial meal at the school before returning home. Every child will undergo a yearly physical examination by a physician on site. The school will also include a section for adult education; literacy classes for adult men and women will be offered in the afternoons and evenings Monday through Friday. In addition, classes on sewing, embroidery, cooking, and other developmental subjects will be offered for women on weekdays. Les Bons Samaritains hopes to recruit 30 new women every year. The Mortel Family Charitable Foundation continues to seek donations to ensure the success of this project and offers several opportunities for charitable giving. First, donations can be made to the Foundation that will assist with maintenance and ongoing operation of the school. Second, the Haitian Child Sponsor Program enables sponsors to provide education, meals, and preventive medical care for a Les Bons Samaritains student for $300 per child per year. Finally, additional opportunities exist to purchase plaques for display in the school or to name key sections of the school building such as the library, the cafeteria, a classroom and more.
