CDU Reaches Academic Milestones

The Catholic Distance University recently announced the successful completion of the university's DETC re-accreditation process. According to Michael Lambert, Executive Secretary of the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) in Washington, DC, CDU was granted re-accreditation without any stipulations. This accreditation will be effective until the year 2010, when the university will again begin the yearlong reevaluation process.

DETC is a national accrediting agency recognized by the US Department of Education for accrediting institutions that teach primarily through distance technologies. The goal of DETC is to foster and preserve high quality, educationally sound and widely accepted distance educational and independent learning institutions. For students attending CDU, this accreditation assures high quality academic, business and ethical standards in all of the university's programs.

The annual meeting of The Catholic Distance University's academic committee, held at the Hamilton campus, marked another early-year milestone for the university. This committee of scholars and board members who are academicians meets twice a year to discuss CDU's academic programs.

Dr. Robert Royal, Graduate Dean at CDU, is Chairman of the Committee. Dr. Royal led a discussion on the university's Masters in Theology degree program, various technology options for delivering course content, new course authors, and CDU's identity as a Catholic university. Bishop John Dougherty was the main celebrant at a Mass offered for the committee members and staff.

Those attending the meeting included Bishop John Dougherty, Auxiliary Bishop of Scranton, Dr. Brian Benestad, University of Scranton, Russell Shaw, Vice Chair for External Affairs, CDU, Dr. Jude P. Dougherty, Retired Dean, School of Philosophy, The Catholic University of America, and Rev. Paul deLadurantaye, Vice Chair for Mission, CDU and Secretary for Religious Education and Sacred Liturgy, Diocese of Arlington. Several members of the CDU staff were also present at the meeting.

The Catholic Distance University offers a master's degree in theology and religious studies, a bachelor completion program in theology, a catechetical diploma, and a wide-range of continuing education and catechist formation programs and courses.

CDU is a Catechetical Institute approved by the Vatican Congregation for The Clergy and is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council. Many of CDU's classes are offered online so learning takes place in your home, at your computer and on your schedule.
