New Catholic Voting Animation Exposes Both Republican and Democratic Platforms as 'Cafeteria Catholi

WHAT: The nonpartisan group Catholic Voting Project has released a new animation that exposes the platforms of both Presidential candidates George Bush and John Kerry as "Cafeteria Catholic," insofar as they pick and choose only the issues that suit them. In the animation, which can be found at www.CafeteriaCatholics.com, the candidates are pictured dining at a fine Catholic restaurant. When they cannot order the full pro-life entree to the Bishop waiter's satisfaction, he sends them to the Catholic Cafeteria across the street.

The animation leads viewers to the Catholic Voting Project Quiz, where they can learn how their views match those of Bush, Kerry, and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, as stated in the Bishops' quadrennenial voting guide "Faithful Citizenship: A Catholic Call to Political Responsibility."

WHY: Catholics represent one of the largest constituencies of undecided voters in critical swing states this election year. Voter-courting efforts from some Catholic groups promote only a handful of issues they deem "non-negotiable", like abortion and gay marriage. Those who do not fall in step with their guidelines are deemed "Cafeteria Catholics."

The Catholic Voting Project uses "Faithful Citizenship" as its framework to illustrate that those who do not follow Church teaching with regard to just war, the death penalty, the environment, and global poverty can also qualify as "Cafeteria Catholics," since these issues are included by the Bishops among some fifty "moral priorities for public life."

The Bishops explicitly warn against single-issue voting in "Faithful Citizenship," and assert that "it is incoherent to isolate some particular element to the detriment of the whole of Catholic doctrine." The goal of the animation and the subsequent quiz is to educate Catholic voters about the full breadth of Catholic Social Teaching so they can make informed, conscientious voting decisions.
