Miss University International title comes to The Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Kenya.

A Kenyan high school trainee teacher was over the weekend declared the prestigious Miss University 2004 at a glittering event held in Seoul, Korea.

Robai Musivilisi Khamasi beat a field of beauty queens from Asia, America and Europe to clinch the title that brings her fame, honour and prestige.

Another Kenyan, Lonina Leteipan, was declared the runners-up for the Mr University International, which was clinched by China's Yi Cheng Hu.

Leteipan is a psychology student at United States University of Africa (USIU-A) while Robai, who is on a teaching practice at Pangani Girls' High School, is a final year student at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. Both represented Kenya at the Mr and Miss University International, an annual global pageantry for university and college students first held in Korea 26 years ago. The pageant offers to promote true beauty of humanity all over the world.

Robai, who turned 21 last March, is a born again Christian and a first born in a family of five. She was born in Nairobi and is an old girl of Pangani Girls'.

Her victory is the second by a Kenyan and the fourth from Africa. Interestingly, the first Kenyan to win the title, Carol Maina, was also a student of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. Carol, who made history at the pageant held in 1997 in Manila, Philippines, was preceded by Mona Mwakalinga from the University of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. Mwakalinga was the first African woman to win the title in 1994.

Robai took the reigns from Mei-I Shih of Taiwan who, together with Mr University International, Fadle Saad from Lebanon, were in Seoul to hand over the titles. Unlike other beauty contests, this was unique in that it involved mandatory community work for which the contestants were also assessed.

Contestants were from Korea, Japan, America, Philippines, Thailand, Brazil, Hungary, Columbia, Russia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tianjin China, Chinese Taipei, Kenya and Lebanon. It was at the Grand Hilton Seoul Convention Centre where 14 young men and 14 young women vied for the grand titles of the 26th Mister and Miss University 2004.

Judges included former First Lady of the Republic of Belarus, Hon Hamilton Green, former Prime Minister of Guyana, Mrs Ludmilla Tichon and the President, Sun Moon University and Chairperson of MMU Korea, Dr Kyung June Lee, said of the winner: "Very statuesque lady at her age who not only has beauty but what we call the X-factor that is to convey the best message on how we could make a change in the world".

When asked what she valued and how it affected her life, Robai said: "I believe that if I always say the truth then you won't remember it too much, but if they see my life that's how I affect others".

Robai becomes the Global Campus Ambassador which in effect makes her a goodwill ambassador for all university students in the world and for which she will make sponsored trips across the world.
