Bishop Sowada Chair in Cultural Anthropology Established in Indonesia

SHOREVIEW, MN - The Crosier Fathers and Brothers U.S. Province announced today that it has established the Bishop Sowada Chair in Cultural Anthropology at the School of Theology, Fajar Timur (STFT), in Abepura, Indonesia. Creation of this Chair in Cultural Anthropology celebrates the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Agats-Asmat and the ordination of Alphonse Sowada, OSC, as the first bishop of the diocese, said the Very Reverend Thomas Carkhuff, OSC, prior provincial "The Bishop Sowada Chair in Cultural Anthropology is a very fitting way to honor the distinguished service of Bishop Sowada as a cultural researcher, field-educator, teacher, and community social advocate," Father Carkhuff said. The Chair in Cultural Anthropology was established to ensure the ongoing study of the cultures and values of the peoples of Papua (formerly Irian Jaya), Indonesia. The Bishop Sowada Chair will provide an annual research and teaching stipend for a graduate level professor at the STFT, who is committed to engaging in the dialog between the social sciences and practical pastoral theology. The holder of the Bishop Sowada Chair in Cultural Anthropology will guide students in contemporary research techniques, critical assessment and cultural sensitivity in ministry. The Crosier Fathers and Brothers first established a mission in the town of Agats, Papua Barat, Indonesia, in 1958. Since then, 31 American Crosiers have served in the Mission in Papua, and currently, five American Crosiers are assigned there. There are 15 Indonesian Crosiers and 28 seminarians affiliated with the Mission. Bishop Sowada was born in Avon, Minnesota. He was ordained a priest in 1958, and began his work as a Crosier missionary in Indonesia in 1961. The Crosier Province obtained a generous commitment from the Freeport-McMoRan Foundation to fund the Chair. The Crosier Fathers and Brothers, officially known as the Canons Regular of the Order of the Holy Cross, is a religious community of men founded nearly 800 years ago in Belgium. Crosiers established a presence in the United States in 1922. The U.S. Province is headquartered in St. Paul, MN, with Communities located in Phoenix, AZ, Riverview, MI, Anoka, Onamia and Shoreview, MN, Hastings, NE, and New York City. ###
