LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) -- Authorities are still trying to make sense of why an eccentric millionaire would spend a small fortune on guns and ammunition, and plot to massacre dozens of random people at a music festival.

Las Vegas Sheriff, Joseph Lombard gave a press conference yesterday in which he added details to a story that has shocked the world.

Paddock may have been planning his attack for up to a year. He purchased 33 assault rifles in October 2016. Investigators are now looking to see if an event could have triggered this buying spree.

Sheriff Lombard believes Paddock may have had an accomplice. The entire arrangement, according to the sheriff, was too much work for just one person to manage. The idea that a second person was involved has been supported by anecdotal evidence. Conspiracy theorists claim there were two shooters the night of the attack, and point to various videos and recordings as evidence. However, these video and audio clips are inconclusive. A waiter shared a room-service receipt from September 27 that shows enough food and beverages to feed two people. However, Paddock is thought to have checked in on the 28th.

When Paddock checked in, he requested a room overlooking the festival. He mentioned the festival by name. The room he wanted wasn't ready, so he was given another, but then moved into his requested suite. He was given a free night in the suite because of the delay. He used Marilou Danley's platinum card to check into the hotel. Danley was his longtime partner and roommate.

The FBI questioned Danley, who had been in the Philippines since September 15. Paddock had sent Danley $100,000 a week before the shooting. Danley said the money was so she could buy a house for her family. She denied any knowledge of what Paddock had planned.

Paddock's car also contained about 100 pounds of explosive ammonium nitrate, enough to turn the vehicle into a suicide bomb. Police suspect he may have been planning to escape his room and do more mayhem with his car. Those plans would have been thwarted when police arrived outside his door just 12 minutes after his shooting began.

Police did not enter his room for another hour, following his attempt to shoot them through the door. They waited for a SWAT team to arrive and breach the door. By that time, Paddock had killed himself with a shot from a revolver into his mouth.

It was also revealed he tried shooting fuel tanks at the nearby McCarran Airport. His bullets did not have penetrating power at the end of their flight to penetrate their steel shells.

Paddock had cameras mounted in the hallway and around his room, to monitor the situation outside. Investigators say none of these cameras recorded anything, they merely fed information to him.

There are other questions that remain unanswered.

A week prior, Paddock rented a room at the Ogden Hotel, overlooking another concert, the 'Life is Beautiful' music festival. He did not carry out his attack at that time, why not?

Where is the hotel security footage of him coming and going? Did anyone else enter his room? What was on his home computer, or his phone?

And another intriguing question is why does he appear to have the number '13' tattooed on his Adam's apple in one picture but not in his death picture? In a widely circulated image taken from social media, Paddock's eyes are closed. On his Adam's apple is a clear number 13, either drawn or tattooed on his neck. The number could also be an illusion, produced by his natural features. The number is likely drawn, although no explanation has been offered as to why.

What is this number 13 on Paddock's neck? Is it a shadow, a drawing, or a tattoo? It does not appear in any other image.

Paddock's case is baffling. There were no outward warning signs. His behavior, up until he trafficked his firearms to the hotel, was likely legal. What drives a man, successful in business, wealthy, and able to spend up to $10,000-a-day gambling and think nothing of it, to throw it all away, taking 59 other souls with him?

For now, there remains more questions than answers.
