Council on American-Islamic Relations, Muslim American Society, blacklisted by UAE

It came as somewhat of a shock to two Islamic groups in the United States when they found that they were recently included in a list of terrorist organizations by the United Arab Emirates.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Muslim American Society (MAS) both consider themselves moderate and mainstream groups, but were among the 80+ groups whom were designated as terrorist organization by the UAE's cabinet on November 15.

Act now, please help save fellow Christians from genocide!

CAIR describes itself as "America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization," while MAS says it is simply "a religious community service organization" which should ensure that they would not sit on the same list as the likes of al-Qaeda and its affiliates throughout the Middle East and North Africa.

This was not the only curious list choice, as both Hamas and Hezbollah were not included.

"Whoever seeks or communicates with a foreign state, terrorist organization or with anyone who works for their interests, to commit any terrorist act, shall be punished with imprisonment for life while the death penalty will be imposed if the terrorist act has been carried out," the UAE's anti-terrorism legislature, which was passed in August, reads.

The bill punishes those within the country who support groups who are on the list.

Both MAS and CAIR said that they were shocked and troubled by this designation, and both said they were seeking official clarification from the UAE government.

"There is absolutely no factual basis for the inclusion (of CAIR) and other American and European civil and advocacy groups on this list," a statement from CAIR said. "Like the rest of the mainstream institutions representing the American Muslim community, CAIR's advocacy model is the antithesis of the narrative of violent extremists."

Furthermore, CAIR is calling for the UAE government to remove it, MAS "and other civil society organizations that peacefully promote civil and democratic rights and that oppose terrorism whenever it occurs, wherever it occurs and whoever carries it out."

The MAS released a similar statement. "The Muslim American Society is a religious community that serves people in the United States. We have no dealings with the (UAE) and hence, are perplexed by this news."

There are accusations that CAIR supports Hamas, and MAS is an affiliate of the Muslim Brotherhood-another group the UAE has declared as terrorists-but there is very little legal evidence to prove these claims.
