LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Officials with the U.S. Navy confirmed that three sailors with the USS Ross were attacked.

Act now, please help save fellow Christians from genocide!

Turkish officials confirmed what appeared in the video, where 20 members of the Turkish Youth Union attacked the sailors, at one point putting plastic bags over their heads, and chanting "Yankee go home!" in English.

Turkish police later arrested a dozen individuals who were involved in the attack.

The sailors were not dressed in uniforms, and were visiting Istanbul during a scheduled port visit to the city. They managed to escape the mob without sustaining serious injuries, and are currently safel aboard the U.S. warship.

No formal charges have been filed as of yet, but the 12 people who were taken into custody are being investigated for the assault.

"We condemn this disrespectful act, which is in no way tolerable," said Tanju Bilgic, a spokesman for the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

The Turkish Youth Union is a self-described left-wing nationalist revolutionary group that opposes what it calls "American imperialism."

The Turkish Youth Union posted on its official website that this attack was intended to show support for Turkish martyrs, and intended to protest the deaths of those who were "killed by imperialism."

"We find you as murderers, as killers, we want you to get out of our land," one of the  Turkish attackers said in the video.
Anti-American feeling is not high in Turkey. Some do not agree with American military involvement in the region, but for the most part this sentiment is restricted to debate, political panels and due processes.

The U.S. Embassy in Turkey did call the incident "appalling," on its Twitter page. "The vast majority of Turks would join us in rejecting an action that so disrespects Turkey's reputation for hospitality."

On November 13, Navy officials have said that they have made no decision on whether or not to forgo future port calls in Turkey, or restrict personnel who are in the region.

"We have enjoyed a strong relationship with Turkey for many years," a statement from the Navy said. "As NATO allies, we share common interests, and this incident will not diminish that strong relationship. Turkish ports have long been very popular destinations for U.S. Navy ships, and our sailors have enjoyed the warm hospitality that has traditionally been extended."
