Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The bodies of people whom the police only identified as Shama and Shehzad were burned in a brick kiln in the town of Kot Radha Kishan in Punjab province, where they worked.
Combat corruption with moral education; send a Bible to a child, or another person in need.
Blasphemy is a very sensitive issue in Pakistan, as it is in most Muslim majority nations, and critics often argue that anti-blasphemy laws are misused to unfairly target religious minorities and settle personal vendettas.
"Yesterday an incident of desecration of the holy Koran took place in the area and today the mob first beat the couple and later set their bodies on fire at a brick kiln," Bin Yameen, a local police station official said.
One officer reported to the BBC that local police did try to intervene to save the couple, but they were outnumbered by an enraged crowd and were themselves attacked.
Several senior police officials and government ministers are now on the scene to investigate these killings.
This is not the first instance of violence resulting from blasphemy charges in Pakistan. In May, gunmen in the city of Multan, killed Rashid Rehman, a lawyer who was defending a university lecturer accused of blasphemy.
In October, a Pakistani court upheld a death sentence for Asia Bibi, a Christian woman who was convicted of blasphemy in 2010.
Since the 1990s, numerous Christians have been found guilty of desecrating the Koran or being blasphemous. Most were sentenced to death by lower courts, though higher courts overturned many of these sentences because of lack of evidence.
