LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Sonar was used to detect a large piece of wreckage at the bottom of the Java Sea, but search and rescue officials do not know if it is a single piece or broken up.
For this tragedy, please pray that a miracle will help the victims and their families.
Early in the morning of December 29 the first signs of wreckage had been discovered, including a detached emergency exit door and several corpses, a sign that the worst had befallen the plane.
This debris was found between 60 and 120 miles away from the aircraft's last known location, Indonesian search and rescuers said.
Six bodies have been recovered so far, three men and three women-one of which was a flight attendant-said Bambang Soelistyo, a search and rescue chief. None of the bodies had life jackets on.
Search teams are still looking for signs of any of the other 162 passengers who had been on the plane, as well as the aircraft's black box, which would enable investigators to understand the events that led up to the plane's disappearance.
Video footage of rescuers picking up debris or bodies created an emotional disturbance among the families of those on the plane, some people fainted or burst into tears.
Maria Endang Wirasmi had four family members aboard the flight: her daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren.
"Everyone became hysterical, especially the mothers," she said. "One mother even blacked out."
Her husband tried to remain optimistic. "We hope that our children will be saved by a miracle," he added.
