Mary and Joseph were once refugees.

Pope Francis pointed out that strangers and people from other religions have a lot to offer us on our faith journey. His remarks were delivered in a Sunday homily at the Vatican as the Marian Jubilee comes to a close.

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Pope Francis pointed out that foreigners and outsiders can teach us virtues.

"How many foreigners, including persons of other religions, give us an example of values that we sometimes forget or set aside?" Pope Francis added these people can "teach us how to walk on the path that the Lord wishes."

Pope Francis discussed the example of Mary and how she was herself a foreigner in Egypt. "Her faith was able to overcome the difficulties," Pope Francis added.

"Let us cling to this simple faith of the Holy Mother of God; let us ask her that we may always come back to Jesus and express our thanks for the many benefits we have received from his mercy."

Pope Francis delivered the remarks on the last day of the Marian Jubilee on Oct. 9, which is part of the Year of Mercy Jubilee. Following the Mass, the Rosary was recited in St. Peter's Square.

Many people attended adoration and confessions in nearby parishes.

As the world experiences upheaval, we encounter more foreigners, some are refugees. We can learn from these encounters, as even people of other religions have much to teach us if we listen. People of other faiths practice virtues we too should live by, including charity, compassion, mercy, devotion, and more.

The mother of God was once a foreigner and a refugee herself. How we treat foreigners and refugees matters.
