Bl. Pedro de Alcantara Villanueva Larrayoz

A native of Navarre, Spain, Lorenzo Villanueva Larrayoz became a brother of the Hospitallers of Saint John of God, taking the name, Pedro de Alcantara. He was serving in Barcelona at the Hospitallers' hospital for children when it was seized by the anti-Catholic Popular Front at the outset of the Spanish Civil War in July of 1936. The brothers were forced to disperse, each finding refuge wherever he could. On September 4, Brother Pedro was arrested together with the family that had taken him into their home. He was executed on September 11.
