A Roman and disciple of St. Paul who was mentioned by the him in his Letter to the Romans 16:13: "Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine." He is also considered in some traditions to be the son of Simon of Cyrene mentioned in Mark 15:21 and to have served as a bishop.
