Hermit who won the respect of King Theodoric of the Ostrogoths. Born in Tuscany, Italy, Hilary entered religious life at the age of twelve. He founded a hermitage, called Galeata and then Saint Ilaro, later given to the Camaldolese. When Theodoric and the Ostrogoths invaded the region, Hilary not only persuaded him to spare the monastery but the land as well.
