New Book Celebrates Beloved Hymn and the Life of Sister Suzanne Toolan

PORTLAND, OR (NOVEMBER 7, 2007) -- Forty-one years after composing "I Am the Bread of Life," one of the most popular Catholic hymns ever written, Sister Suzanne Toolan, RSM, tells the story of her remarkable ministry of music and prayer in the new book I Am the Bread of Life. The book was created with the collaboration of Elizabeth Dossa, director of communications for the Sisters of Mercy Burlingame Region. OCP will distribute I Am the Bread of Life ($16.95, item no. 20738).

The publication of this commemorative book coincides with the celebration of Sister Suzanne's 80th birthday. She shares the story behind her most famous composition in the book and introduces an original hymn, "I Will Sing of Your Faithfulness," never before published. Her insights and wisdom about ritual, silence and prayer shine through the pages of I Am the Bread of Life, offering moving glimpses into the grace of her life in a religious community with the Sisters of Mercy and her spiritual journey as a teacher, composer and retreat leader.

Sister Toolan was one of the first composers to write music for the Catholic Church in English after Vatican II. In 1982, she led the transformation of the Sisters' novitiate into Mercy Center, a retreat and spirituality center, and introduced Taizé prayer to the West Coast in 1983. She was a teacher, composer and inspiring spiritual figure at Mercy High School in Burlingame, California for over 30 years.

A special acknowledgment Mass and book signing open to the public is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007, at Mercy Center in Burlingame. All who have sung with Sister Suzanne in school or in the Mercy community are especially invited to sing at the Mass with a 10:30 a.m. rehearsal. The book signing immediately follows the 11:15 a.m. Mass. For information, call 650-340-7480.
