SILVER SPRINGS, MD - JULY 30, 2007 - Dar es Salaam, the African port city, whose name literally means "Haven of Peace", is the unlikely setting in which Christian Mjomba sets off on his "journey to hell and back" as one reviewer put it . But the locale of this epic novel, which is now in its 3rd edition, soon changes to the Mountains of the Moon in Western Uganda. For it is there that the diaries "Mssaijja" (Adam) and "Mkkaili" (Eve) kept are found by copper miners!

Despite its name, The Gospel According to Judas Iscariot is no Jeffrey Archer "mystery". Reading Mr. Luguya's novel is likely watching a horror movie - one in which Good (represented by "the Deliverer") and Evil (represented by "Old Scratch") are pitted against each other, with Mjomba caught in the middle!

A member of the seminary brotherhood at the time, Mjomba was determined to turn out a winning thesis on the subject of Original Virtue. And he imagined that doing so would come easier if he succeeded in employing the devil as his mouthpiece for expounding on the Church's dogmas!

Using the platform that was handed to him freely by the seminarian, Beelzebub did not have any qualms taking over, and using the opportunity to pontificate on a slew of subjects. His sermons on such subjects as "the Workings of Divine Grace" and "Damnation" will blow you away!

Although he was the "Father of Lies", knowing that the descendants of Adam and Eve have been inclined to sin since Man's fall from grace, and also knowing the extent to which the spiritual malaise typified the condition of "humans", Diabolos saw tremendous advantages in shining as much light on truth as possible. Because then he could move in for the kill when it became obvious that the "poor forsaken children of Adam and Eve" were failing to live up to expectations.

By the time poor Mjomba realized, too late, that his scheme of trying to use Satan to turn out a winning thesis had backfired, and that it was the Evil Ghost that was using him to consign every body to hell, "Old Scratch" was already comfortably esconsed in his new position as preacher and "Guardian of Truth". Unlike so many preachers who prefer to beat about the bush, Beelzebub was not the one to mince any words as he delivered homilies that were too convincing! And, in the end, not even the seminarian escapes the net which the devil casts very wide indeed.

Indeed, a more fitting title for this novel would have been: "The Gospel According to the Evil Ghost"! As Mjomba himself readily confessed as he commenced work on his thesis, he was a "prisoner of his own imagination". And it was this that led the seminarian to engage in his reckless gambit, and one that predictably backfired with disastrous consequences.

"Hellishly delicious...sheer devilish delight" is how Midwest Book Review describes this book. Stanford Business wrote that Mjomba, the fictitious author of the book-within-the book, "presents an African perspective of spirituality in general, and Christianity in particular". And the review posted by Spiritrestoration.org has this to say: "In the same way, C. S. Lewis wrote The Screwtape Letters, Joseph Luguya attempts to describe the spiritual realm from a human perspective...This book is one every fan of C. S. Lewis should check out...it is a very convicting book."
