EWTN PREMIERE: New StoryTel Film Explores Soldiers of Christ in America

OMAHA, NE (October 24, 2014) ― After four years in the making, StoryTel Foundation announces its documentary "Miles Christi: Soldiers of Christ in America" will premiere on EWTN Global Catholic Network on Nov. 16, 2014 at 4 p.m. EST.

This one-hour film documents the formation of the Argentinian religious order Miles Christi and its mission to help American Catholics grow in holiness.

Filmed on location in Luján, Argentina, and throughout the state of Michigan, this ON ASSIGNMENT investigative documentary takes the viewer behind the scenes and across cultures into the personal sphere of spiritual renewal.

In-depth interviews with Miles Christi priests, brothers and seminarians weave a first-person account of the order's founding in 1994, its expansion to the United States in 1999 and its providential connection with Servant of God Father John Hardon, SJ. An original music score and rich cinematography create an immersion experience targeted for audiences who are striving to grow deeper in their faith.

As their name suggests and the film depicts, Miles Christi priests and brothers are spiritual soldiers of Christ dedicated to the sanctification of the laity. The documentary shows how they fulfill this mission by living and teaching the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius and providing spiritual direction for lay Catholics.

"More than ever we need soldiers, spiritually speaking, who will fight the good fight of faith," explains Father Patrick Wainwright, Miles Christi priest, on the documentary.

As the film continues, viewers discover that Miles Christi priests and brothers are deployed all over the United States, Argentina and Mexico where they lead Ignatian silent retreats and offer a Christ-centered alternative to the dominant secular worldview.

"If there is no spirituality of conquest, it is very difficult to have the momentum, the enthusiasm, the desire to seek out others," says Father Roberto Yannuzzi, founder and superior general of Miles Christi, as he describes the order's charism on the documentary.

This desire to seek out others and encourage them in their pursuit of holiness is shared by both Miles Christi and StoryTel Foundation.

"When I first met the priests, I could tell they really had a strong motivation to bring people to holiness," said Don Carney, director of the film and president of StoryTel. "That's exactly what I wanted to promote with this film. The mission of Miles Christi is our mission, too."

"Miles Christi: Soldiers of Christ in America" conveys this hope of inspiring others to strive for holiness in their own lives while also revealing the joyful, lively personality of the growing religious order. It's what Father Yannuzzi calls "a smiling spirit" in one scene of the film.

"You can tell right away when there's a natural joy, a spontaneous fraternity in a community," adds Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, on the film. "That's what I see in their community."

The documentary gives the audience a rare opportunity to see what goes on behind the walls of a religious community. Guitars play lively Argentinian music, voices lift in song and laughter, and seminarians embrace the daily structure of prayer and study. Spanish accents and personal stories add depth and authenticity to the film, while beautiful landscapes flow between each segment.

"I was so excited to receive the raw footage, especially the shots from Argentina," said writer and film editor Phil Halpin. "It was completely stunning. I knew we'd be able to transport the audience into a different world, not only through the order's compelling story, but also through the beauty of the images."

The documentary is the first film to go on an actual Ignatian silent retreat. The retreat segment of the film captures the essence of being on a silent retreat and illustrates how Miles Christi priests and brothers follow their call to guide the laity to greater holiness. Retreat participants briefly break the silence to share their personal experiences with the film audience.

Founded in 2008, StoryTel Foundation is a nonprofit media foundation dedicated to inspiring people to restore the sacred. StoryTel accomplishes this mission by producing documentaries and other film projects about organizations and people who are collaborating with God to accomplish His work here on Earth.

"We want our film projects to further the missions of the organizations we work with," Carney said, "but we especially want to help the viewers connect with God and restore the sacred in their own lives and communities."

StoryTel's ON ASSIGNMENT television documentary series goes behind the scenes to discover specifically how people and organizations are restoring the sacred. One of StoryTel's previous ON ASSIGNMENT documentaries, "Where Heaven Meets Earth: Restoring the Sacred at St. Peter Church," has been broadcast on EWTN six times in the last year.
