Teacher Wins $3,000 Cash Prize for Catholic YA Novel

WELLESLEY, MA (September 22, 2014) - The first winner of 2014's Tuscany Prize for Catholic Fiction has been announced with Harper's Ferry resident and local middle school teacher Mark Guiney winning first place with his work entitled The Adventures of Basil Black: Ascension to the Just Throne.

"We had a tremendous increase in submissions across all categories. The competition was stiff. Mark has earned his spot," said Peter Mongeau, founder of Tuscany Press, which offers the Tuscany Prize. "It's exciting to see young authors honing the craft of good story-telling that can offer a perspective of hope and admiration for the grandeur of God without compromising plot, good character development, and imagination. It is a great story."

The author will receive a $3,000 cash prize and a publishing contract courtesy of Tuscany Press, an award-winning independent publishing house based out of Wellesley, Massachusetts. The award also brings bragging rights as the first Tuscany Prize winner to be announced this year.

Founded in 2012, Tuscany Press has emerged as a leading independent publisher in fiction and home of the Tuscany Prize, which offers authors a chance to compete for cash prizes totaling over $10,000. The Tuscany Prize is awarded each year for novels, young adult novels, short stories and foreign and English language films.
