Day 8 - Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe for a New Culture of Life
Day 8 Novena Reflection
Let us pray daily for Gospel humility - in our personal lives and in the life of the whole Church of Jesus Christ
Saint John Paul II made his last pilgrimage to Mexico to canonize Juan Diego as a saint on July 31, 2002. He established his feast day as December 9, the date of Our Lady of Guadalupe's first apparition to him.
In his homily he spoke these words:
"With deep joy I have come on pilgrimage to this Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Marian heart of Mexico and of America, to proclaim the holiness of Juan Diego, the simple, humble Indian who contemplated the sweet and serene face of Our Lady of Tepeyac."
"Blessed Juan Diego, a good, Christian Indian, whom simple people have always considered a saint!...
"In this new saint, you have a marvelous example of a just and upright man, a loyal son of the Church, docile to his Pastors, who deeply loved the Virgin and was a faithful disciple of Jesus."
Before his final blessing, he said, "You have now in your new saint a remarkable example of holiness...May he be a model for you and others that you may also be holy."
In 2003 the late Pope commemorated his twenty fifth anniversary as the successor of Peter. On that day, he said, "Ever since I went on pilgrimage for the first time to the splendid Shrine of Guadalupe on January 29, 1979, she has guided my steps in these almost twenty-five years of service as Bishop of Rome and universal pastor of the Church."
He continued, "I wish to invoke her, the sure way to encounter Christ, and who was the first evangelizer of America, as the 'Star of Evangelization,' entrusting to her the ecclesial work of all her sons and daughters of America."
Our Lady of Guadalupe, Star of the New Evangelization, pray for us.
Novena Prayer Asking the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Beloved Father, through the life, death and resurrection of your only begotten Son, Jesus the Christ, we have become your adopted sons and daughters.
Through Baptism we are now members of His Body, the Church, which is Your family.
Before your Son and our Savior gave up the last drop of His Sacred blood - and breathed his last breath - to set us free from sin and death -
He turned to His Beloved Mother at the foot of the Cross.
And said
'Woman, behold your son.'
Then he said to the disciple whom he loved with a special affection, John, and said,
'Behold your mother'" (John 19: 26-27).
The Mother of Jesus is the Mother of His Church - and our Mother.
And Now Dear Father, in the name of Jesus, and under the maternal care of Mary, His Mother, under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, we ask for the end of the culture of death.
We ask for the spread of a new culture of life in the Americas.
We pray for the new evangelization of the Church and the conversion of the Americas to Jesus Christ and His Church.
And here, I present my own personal intention:
