MUNTINLUPA, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - Homicide Monitor is an interactive map made by The Igarapé Institute, a think-tank based in Brazil, according to the Daily Mail. By compiling data from publicly reported cases, from 2000 to now, about the number of deaths from murder per 100,000 of the population, this interactive map claims to be the most comprehensive.
"The Homicide Monitor is the most comprehensive publicly available data set on murder in the world. It is a data-driven data visualization tool designed to show the distribution, dimensions and dynamics of homicidal violence in an interactive and accessible manner," said its page.
The interactive map developers also explained that since most numbers of death from homicide were prevalent in Latin America and the Caribbean, they added additional information about these countries.
Spin the 3D globe on their website, select the country and users can receive information on the total number of homicides, rates and statistics per gender and age, as well as the weapons used during the intentional murder.
According to their tally, Honduras is the most dangerous place, due to the highest murder rate: 7,172 homicides in 2012 with a rate of 85.5 per 100,000, with 83 percent by firearms. The high number is being linked to drugs, as this country is the main route for drug smuggling to the United States.
Venezuela comes in second with a rate of 53.7. The U.S. Virgin Islands was found to have 52.6 per 100,000 ranking the country as the third dangerous place due to murder.
Swaziland is the only country not from the Latin America and the Caribbean to be at the top ten, with a rate of 33.8 per 100,000 people.
According to the Homicide Monitor, the safest places, with regards to the risk of being murdered, were UK and Western Europe, Canada, Chile, Australia and China.
