LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Consumers are fed up with gasoline powered cars. Fluctuating gas prices, dirty air, and smelly fuel are among the reasons why consumers want to escape gasoline. Ending our dependence on foreign fuel is also a major incentive.
Consumers have made clear they want cleaner, more efficient vehicles. The popularity of hybrid vehicles and Tesla's new all-electric vehicles makes this clear. Tesla has accepted over $1 billion in pre orders for its Model 3 car. The car is expected to have a range of 215 miles and a price starting around $35,000 and up depending on features.
However, Chevrolet's Bolt is intended to compete with the Model 3, and will be out within the next couple months.
The Bolt has a longer range, at 238 miles and it's price will start around $37,500.
The popularity of hybrid cars has kept their price high, around 30,000 and up for even base models. Consumers like being able to go longer periods without filling up. But electric cars may not keep people out of gas stations altogether.
As more electric cars take to the road with longer ranges, more people will need to visit filling stations to recharge. The good news is a fill up takes about 30 minutes. And electric charging stations are cheaper than gas pumps to install. Filling stations are expected to begin installing charging stations soon to meet the demand of long-range travelers.
There are other electric cars on the market, but they all have ranges under 100 miles. In the years to come, consumers can expect new designs on electric cars to emerge as the technology improves. The age of the combustion automobile engine is at an end, although it may take decades to see the majority of such vehicles disappear.
By comparison, thirty years passed between the invention of a practical, consumer automobile and the end of the horse-drawn carriage on most city streets. The present transition is equally significant.Â
