We ask you, urgently: don’t scroll past this
Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - A team of Dutch scientists have developed the first robots capable of learning, reproducing and evolving. Such robots might be ideal for colonizing planets such as Mars, or they could just decide to take over the Earth and eradicate all humanity.
Known as the "Robot Baby Project" scientists have created a mini-habitat for robots, as well as a 3D printer, wi-fi, and a nursery for the miniature machines.
The miniature robots move about their environment and learn, and they evaluate one another. They communicate over wi-fi and when they are happy with their match, they can mate virtually, producing an offspring with randomized variations in the 3D printer. The printer builds the baby which is released into a robot nursery until it learns how to navigate its environment.
The process can repeat as long as there is material for the 3D printer to keep producing offspring. Researchers say this process of mating and reproducing allows robots to "evolve" and produce offspring with new abilities which can make them better suited for certain tasks.
Such a system, they believe, could help robots colonize Mars, or another environment where humans cannot go, but adaptability is essential.
However, such technology could also be harnessed by intelligent, thinking robots to rapidly reproduce and possibly overwhelm humans.
A known risk factor for artificial intelligence is that some day soon we will develop thinking robots that are literally smarter than humans. Such devices could begin to see humans as a danger or a liability and would be capable of overwhelming us.
Soon, we will have to discuss and answer questions about the development of AI and robots and what limitations we should impose upon scientific creativity. Because left to themselves, scientists will find ways to play God, and that might be the worst idea, and the last idea in history.
