LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - AT&T purchased DirecTV with big expansion plans in mind.

Since acquiring DirecTV, AT&T has announced plans to provide cable TV content over three streaming options, none of which will require traditional cable extensions.

The AT&T website described it's DirecTV packages that "beat cable."

"AT&T has your cable TV alternative," it boasts, adding that you can choose to "Stay connected with local channels."

The three DirecTV plans will be similar to current cable plans, which include on-demand and live streaming options, but add-ons and tailored packages will also be available.

None of the specifics have been announced, but senior VP strategy Tony Goncalves reported "high quality premium content, live and on-demand, and making that sort of robust offering available across the board to consumers" is AT&T's priority.

Since the introduction of streaming networks such as HBO GO, hundreds of thousands of viewers have subscribed for low cost streaming services.

Not to be outdone, AT&T's decision to enter the streaming market may prove to be a game changer.

"That's why we feel like what we need to do is offer a robust offering with a good amount of content as opposed to very targeted offerings," Gocalves explained.

"Being a scaled provider like we are with the reach that we have, creating offers of content that are premium in nature and appeal to lots of consumers is really important. It's the only way to reach scale."
