We ask you, urgently: don’t scroll past this
Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

MUNTINLUPA CITY, PHILIPPINES (Catholic Online) - Power blackouts are common in some countries, while other areas experience this during weather disturbances and unpredicted power disruptions. In the event of a storm, earthquake and other catastrophes, electricity may be missing for a considerable amount of time. Charging your phones and other devices that require electricity used to be deemed impossible.
Stower, a company from San Francisco, has created a Candle Charger - capable of converting heat from a naked candle flame to 2.5 Watts of energy. This energy is capable of charging portable devices, such as mobile phones, cameras and other devices that can be connected through a USB port.
The amount of energy the Candle Charger creates can provide for up to six hours and is capable of charging two iPhones to full battery.
Stower had previously developed a portable thermoelectric charger, prior to the Candle Charger. This device used camping stoves or campfires as the source of heat. The company is now seeking funds via crowd-funding sites, like Kickstarter, to develop the Candle Charger for indoor use, instead of using it beside a campfire.
"When power outages hit, staying connected to family, friends and emergency services is critical. After years of work and dozens of iterations, we're proud to introduce the Candle Charger, the first indoor generator designed to charge smartphones and keep them charged," explained the company. "The Candle Charger is a safe, compact, and effective miniature power plant that provides on-demand electricity for USB devices when the grid can't."
The system comes with a set of candles, but will work with any type of same size candle. The Candle Charger, as claimed by Stower, will produce enough energy to charge smartphones, digital cameras and small USB devices, but may not be enough to provide a source of energy for tablets and laptops.
The Candle Charger, upon its release is estimated to be priced at around $65.
