A British geneticist says he now has evidence that legends of the Himalayan Yeti are more than myth and they have a solid basis in fact.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - British geneticist Bryan Sykes is about to publish findings which conclude that the Yeti is an actual beast living in the Himalayan region. The tests suggest the creature may still inhabit the Himalayas.
The creature, according to Sykes, was actually a bear, a hybrid species somewhere between the brown bear which is common in many parts of the world, and the polar bear. Moreover, the species isn't extinct, it is simply unrecognized by science because hard evidence is virtually non-existent.
Sykes says he performed genetic tests on two tufts of hair from the western Himalayas in the region of Ladakh and Bhutan. One tuft was forty years old and the other ten. Both samples suggest they came from the same species of creature, a hybrid bear that hasn't yet been observed by science aside from its hair.
That doesn't mean the creature hasn't been spotted.
Genes extracted from the samples revealed the creature is a species of bear, a presumably long-extinct hybrid between a polar bear and a brown bear that branched off about 120,000 to 40,000 years ago. The DNA is an exact match, suggesting that at least as recently as a decade ago, a lost species of bear roamed the Himalayas.
Yeti sightings still occur, just as bigfoot sightings in America, Russia, and in other remote regions of the world. In addition to contemporary sightings, ancient folklore dating back hundreds or even thousands of years, claim the existence of Yeti, Sasquatch, and similar creatures.
How can it be that cultures divided by geography and time all have the same experience if nothing is there?
The answer is that some people really are seeing something. According to Sykes, at least in the Himalayas, they're seeing a rare species of bear. Additional research and anecdotal evidence collected within the past few decades also seems to point to the conclusion that a species of bear is wandering the Himalayas.
Of course there are hoaxers out there. In 2008, alleged yeti pelts were revealed by genetic testing to be cut from goat hides.
Still, scientists have traipsed much of the world, they have hardly discovered all of its organisms. There are probably still millions of uncatalogued species of animals on the planet. This past summer, scientists announced the discovery of a new species of legless lizard right next to Los Angeles International Airport.
If a new species can be discovered there, then imagine what could still abide in the world's nether regions where few dare to venture.
