Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - To be fair, it's unlikely you'll be dropping your iPad from space anytime soon, but just in case you do and you didn't pay for that extended protection plan, your iPad will have one last hope - the G-Form Extreme Edge case.
Makers of the protective cases conducted a publicity stunt in the Nevada desert using an iPad, one of their cases, and a weather balloon. You can see where this is going.
The video shows a working iPad protected by a G-Form Extreme Edge case. The tablet and case are attached to a camera and balloon contraption when released. The camera footage records the rise to approximately 100,000 ft. The height is so extreme the curvature of Earth is clearly visible against the black of space.
Eventually the balloon bursts and the scene spins out of control as the iPad begins accelerating back to the ground. The footage shows the brown Nevada countryside rushing up until the tablet lands with a thud amid a clump of dried weeds on a hillside.
After the fall, the iPad is unscathed, working normally and no worse for its wear.
While such level of protection is probably a bit much for everyday use on Earth, it is still nice to know such protection is available.
However, amateur space enthusiasts will know that the iPad in the video is not actually the first iPad in space. Notably, the iPad did not actually make it to the edge of space, although it rose well above the altitude at which aircraft operate. Meanwhile, two iPads beat this high-flying example by traveling to the International Space Station in October of last year. The devices were sent to provide entertainment for the cosmonauts and astronauts there.
