Dayton advances into 'Sweet Sixteen'

The third round of the NCAA Division 1 tournament passed with two Catholic schools knocked out in upset losses, and only one remaining in the "Sweet Sixteen," the tournament's fourth round.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Coming off a close upset over sixth-seeded Ohio State University (25-10, 17-3) in the second round, the eleventh-seed in the South, University of Dayton (26-10, 10-6) upset third-seeded Syracuse University (28-6, 14-4) 55-53 on March 22; making it to the fourth round of the tournament for the first time since 1984.

Dayton will face off against tenth-seeded Stanford University (23-12, 10-8) on March 27, which has also paved its way to the "Sweet Sixteen" through upsets. Stanford knocked out seventh-seeded University of New Mexico (27-7, 15-3) 58-53 on March 21, and on March 23 they had a 60-57 upset over the second-seeded team, University of Kansas (25-10, 14-4).

Seeded second in the East, Villanova University (29-5, 16-2) lost 77-65 to seventh-seeded University of Connecticut (28-8, 12-6) on March 22 in the third round.

Gonzaga University beat the ninth-seeded Oklahoma State University (21-13, 8-10) 85-77 on March 21 in the second round before being crushed 84-61 by first-seeded University of Arizona (32-4, 15-3) on March 23.

Third in the West, Creighton University (27-8, 14-4) knocked out 14th-seeded University of Louisiana at Lafayette (23-12, 11-7) on March 21. Creighton was then upset in the third by sixth-seeded Baylor (26-11, 9-9) on March 23.

Providence College (23-12, 10-8) the 11th-seeded team in the East, lost to the sixth-seeded University of North Carolina (24-10, 13-5) on March 21.

The "Sweet Sixteen" will take place over March 27 and 28. In the South, number one seed University of Florida (34-2, 18-0) plays the fourth-seeded UCLA (28-8, 12-6), while Dayton will play Stanford.

The West will see its number one seed, Arizona takes on fourth-seeded San Diego State University (31-4, 16-2), while Baylor takes on the second seed, University of Wisconsin (28-7, 12-6).

In the East, first seed University of Virginia (30-6, 16-2) takes on fourth-seeded Michigan State University (2808, 12-6), and third seed Iowa State University (20-13, 9-9) plays Uconn.

The Midwest has fourth-seeded University of Louisville (31-5, 15-3) take on eighth-seeded University of Kentucky (26-10, 12-6), while second seed University of Michigan (27-8, 15-3) plays the 11th-seeded University of Tennessee (24-12, 11-7).
