LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) -- A second day of hearings for Neil Gorsuch, President Trump's pick for the Supreme Court, went well for the nominee. During the hearings, Gorsuch said the court has reaffirmed Roe v. Wade several times and he did not wish to offer his personal opinion. He also refused to provide his personal opinion on guns and campaign finance.

He made clear he believes strongly in the separation of powers between the branches of government. He also emphasized that he believes corporations have religious liberty rights under the law.

The nomination of Gorsuch is an important one. His elevation to the court will restore a conservative balance to the court that was lost when Antonin Scalia died over a year ago. A conservative court is best because it moderates the pace of change in society.

Many experts agree Gorsuch is opposed to abortion, restrictions on the rights of individuals to own firearms, and campaign finance reform. He believes corporations can be treated as people with rights to religious expression and speech.

Although he declined to discuss the matter during his hearing, he is widely known as a pro-life justice who will support the rights of the unborn. While he may not be able to overturn Roe. v. Wade, he can affirm other decisions that allow states to protect the lives of unborn children.

He also favors a careful reading of the law, and said that the text of the law is key to understanding it. He credited his Catholic teacher, Sister Mary Rose, with teaching him to diagram sentences, a tool he uses today for understanding what he reads.

Gorsuch currently sits on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, based in Denver. His appointment would fill the seat left vacant by Antonin Scalia.

He enters a third day of hearings today. A vote on his nomination will be held on April 3.
