Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) -- President Trump has nominated Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals judge Neil Gorsuch to replace the late justice Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court. Gorsuch is well respected, conservative, and at 49 years old, is the youngest appointee ever nominated to the court.
President Trump pointed out that Gorsuch has qualifications that are "beyond dispute."
Gorsuch is an Episcopalian, so his religious views are naturally aligned with Catholicism. He is clearly pro-life, although he has never written about Roe v. Wade. He has written a book expressing his opposition to euthanasia and physician assisted suicide.
In his book, "The Future of Assisted Suicide Euthanasia," Gorsuch said "all human beings are intrinsically valuable and the intentional taking of human life by private persons is always wrong."
Gorsuch is also conservative on a number of other issues, opposing what he calls "judicial activism." He once wrote that "American liberals have become addicted to the courtroom, relying on judges and lawyers rather than elected leaders and the ballot box as the primary means of effecting their social agenda."
He is also conservative on issues of religious freedom, respect for marriage and the First Amendment.
Democrats have vowed to oppose his nomination, threatening to filibuster any vote to confirm him. Charles Schumer has insisted that Gorsuch is not part of the "mainstream" and that he would therefore oppose him "tooth and nail."
Antonin Scalia died in February 2016, and the court has suffered a vacancy for nearly a full year.
Gorsuch is married and has two children, and lives in Boulder, Colorado. He enjoys skiing and fishing and he also has a ranch where he raises animals including horses, chickens and goats.
