Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) -- The inauguration of President Trump has six prayers, three invocations, and three benedictions. That's a record total of 12 episodes of prayer in a single inauguration. Trump will also take the oath of office on two Bibles. One Bible was a gift from his mother, and the other is the Bible used by Abraham Lincoln.
This is a critical moment for our nation. We are more politically divided than we have been in years. Our own media has worked to undermine the incoming president and to divide the people against one another. Political opinions have set friends and family members against one another.
Yet, we have come to a decision. We have elected a president who is now, for better or worse, the head of our state. Wishing for him to fail is like being on a ship and wishing the captain to hit an iceberg.
President Trump is an unconventional man, by political standards. We cannot be sure what his tenure will be like. He may be an unfortunate chapter in our history, or he may become one of the most phenomenal presidents of our age. Andrew Jackson was controversial, but today he graces the $20 bill. Abraham Lincoln's election was so divisive, states began seceding from the Union before he was even inaugurated. Today, monuments, schools and even towns are named after him, and he graces the $5 bill and the penny.
Will Trump have a similar legacy?
The chapters of his presidency remain unwritten. And despite everything that has been said, despite the sensationalism, much of it his own fault, there is no rule that the future must be like the past. Starting now, President Trump can become a great leader or a great tragedy. Which of the two is solely up to him.
It is up to us to pray, and to encourage the best he can offer as he begins his career in public service.
