How will Trump deal with the UN? Don't look to his campaign promises -- look to how he views himself

Trump may be forced to compromise, but he's going to insist on getting better terms from everyone.

What will Donald Trump do to the UN? So far, there is considerable speculation and few details. Reporters are trying to dig up his old remarks to get some sense of how Trump will deal with the U.N. and the many international crises the country faces.

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Is Trump going to withdraw the USA from the UN? Will he stop anticipated payments? What about climate change agreements and defense accords?

Trump is a businessman, and a man of strong opinions, but with little political experience. While he has made numerous comments about the UN and world affairs in the past, he has done so from a campaign position, and from a position of less experience. What will happen once he takes office?

There are several issues that Trump will need to take position on in the next couple months, before he assumes office. Once he takes office, he will need to make quick decisions.

Among those issues are how to deal with Iran. Previously, Trump has suggested taking a tough stance with Iran, which is one of the more technologically capable, experienced and well-prepared militaries in the region. Iran is a large, mountainous country and taking it over would be impossible in the event of a war. Iran is also on good terms with Russia. What happens if the nuclear crisis boils over, or if Iran strikes Israel, closes the Strait of Hormuz, or initiates a conflict with Saudi Arabia?

Trump will need to game out all these scenarios with his staff as well as with the military and other experts to make an informed decision. Once he has that new perspective, his decision might be different than the view he shared on the campaign trail.

This may also happen in other areas. Climate change is one such area. The United States has agreed to a set of accords that will reduce carbon emissions and help slow climate change. Trump denies this is a problem and that climate change even exists. At least he did so on the campaign trail.

Once again, he will have to game out the scenario with his staff and various experts and we may find his opinion changes. The military has labeled climate change a major factor that will influence future decisions. Not just because of weather, but shifts in climate can create new pressures in some regions. Old power structures could shift. It is difficult to forecast how this will impact the world's politics.

Refugees are one area where Trump has drawn a hard line. Will refugees still be welcome in America? What will become of millions of people already living in America without permission? These are potential crises that the UN would be expected to intervene and assist with.

What about other concerns, such as the international criminal court? NATO? Trade agreements? These are not part of the UN's purview, but they will have an impact.

Donald Trump is a nationalist. As such, he will put American concerns first. He will push for trade deals that favor the U.S. more than before.

It is unlikely that the U.S. will withdraw from NATO, but other countries will be asked to pick up the slack.

Trump also sees himself as a tough negotiator. This personal opinion means he will insist on more concessions than others.

Reality and practical considerations means he will have to compromise between what he said on the campaign trail and what he does while in office. Massive, dramatic shifts in U.S, policy aren't as likely as some fear - or hope. However, he will be making his influence felt, and the only question is to what degree.
