'Someone needed to stop Trump.'

Mentally handicapped or a vigilante? Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump's would-be assassin may have been on to something.

Highlights

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Less than two weeks ago, 19-year-old Michael Sandford attempted to steal a police officer's gun during a Donald Trump rally in Las Vegas.

After his arrest, Sandford admitted he wanted to take the weapon "to kill Trump."

Since news of Sandford's attempted homicide, stories of his instability have splashed headlines.

According to KSNV, Sandford is a Britain who suffers from Asberger's. He was in the United States illegally with an expired visa and had been living out of his car for a month.

Daily Mail reported what Sandford's father, Paul Davey, had to say about his son after the attempted attack:

"I asked him what happened and he would only say that if Trump was elected, it would change the world and that somebody had to stand up for America. I have never heard him talk like that before. I can't understand why he was so motivated and politicised [sic] that he thought grabbing a gun from a policeman was a good idea."

In a formal complaint, it was explained "[Sanford stated] if he were on the street tomorrow, he would try this again."

The complaint continued, reading: "Sanford claimed he had been planning to kill Trump for about a year but decided to act on this occasion because he finally felt confident about trying it."

The young man also told authorities he originally planned a second attempt to attack Trump, at his next rally in Phoenix, AZ, should he hesitate in Las Vegas.

Sanford has since stood before a federal judge who charged the boy with committing a violent act in a restricted area.

The Secret Service told CNN it charged Sandford for violating two federal laws including assault, and he could face up to ten years in prison.

After a few conversations with his son, Davey claimed Sandford must have been listening to someone who filled his head with poisonous thoughts.

"I think the people he met, and was living with, may know what motivated Michael. Did someone start feeding him information? Did they set him up for it? I really think he has been brainwashed."

It is no secret Trump has several critics - primarily for his controversial use of language and his innate desire to post zingers to his Twitter account - but do his antics warrant an assassination attempt?

Does the United States need a protector from Donald Trump?

Critics believe Trump would make a horrible president and cited how the businessman has no political experience, has gone bankrupt four times, is a media bully and how he is a "terrible Christian" - yet America loves him.

Regardless of Trump's history, it is important to understand he would be held to certain standards in the Oval Office he was never subjected to in the business world.

He would also have several competent advisors, such as Jeff Sessions of Alabama, to help him make the best decisions for the United States.

Though many question Trump's policies - which have been few and unexplained - one thing the public can believe is Trump's ability to clean up corruption.

He made it clear several times that he will prosecute Hillary Clinton if he is elected president - something Obama obviously isn't interested in pursuing.

Trump doesn't seem to be a huge threat to the United States but should he ever become one, it is clear Stanford is not a the hero America would need.
