We ask you, urgently: don’t scroll past this
Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.Help Now >

The Department of Health and Human Services has ruled that an amendment to the law, known as the Weldon Amendment, which protects doctors and nurses and other healthcare providers who object to abortion, does not apply to insurers who under California law must provide coverage that includes elective abortion services.
In 2014, California law was changed to reclassify abortion as a "basic health service."
According to the DHHS decision, the protection of the Weldon Amendment does not apply to insurers who are willing to cover abortions.
The decision reads in part, "There is no healthcare entity protected under the statute that has asserted religious or moral objections to abortion and therefore there is no covered entity that has been subject to discrimination within the meaning of the Weldon Amendment."
The net result is that churches in California must continue to offer insurance coverage that provides abortions.
The Obama administration has little regard for churches or institutions of morals and faith. His administration believes in abortion on demand, and everyone must participate in this shameful practice. The right of a women to destroy her unborn child eclipses the right of people to follow their moral conscience.
Obscenely liberal California law will continue to insist that churches and other faith-based organizations must pay for elective abortion coverage.
Challenges are expected to move forward in the courts.
