Who's going to jail? IRS turns over list of over 400 conservative organizations targeted for persecution under Obama watch

Someone should be in jail, but everybody remains at their job, promoted even.

After three years of constant pressure from watchdog groups and legal scrutiny, the IRS has just released a list of conservative groups targeted because of their political orientation. The IRS has provided the list to the court following repeated orders by federal judges to the IRS to stop delaying.

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - It's been three years since the IRS confessed to targeting conservative groups, particularly non-profits, for extra scrutiny. This extra scrutiny appears to have been an organized effort to suppress conservative speech and perspective. Federal judges have ordered the IRS to produce a list of those organizations targeted for extra scrutiny.

The case against the IRS is a class action lawsuit, so having a comprehensive list helps to notify those who could be a party to the action.

The list includes 426 organizations. Another 40 organizations have opted out of the suit.

Questions still abound. Who established this policy of targeting conservative groups? Who knew it was happening? Did Obama know it was happening? And should he still be held responsible since the IRS is under his direction?

Most importantly, how do we prevent such abuse of power again?

The IRS's action had a chilling effect on conservative speech, particularly before the 2011 elections which saw the reelction of President Obama. Could a different result been obtained had conservatives been free to exercise their First Amendment rights to gather and speak?

The IRS targeted organizations that appeared to be conservative for extra scrutiny and demanded a long list of specific details, often the full text of entire speeches, reading lists and more. The questions were unusually intrusive. It's believed that by making non-profit status difficult to obtain, many organizations would simply fold, thus diminishing conservative political influence in the public realm.

So far, no people have been fired, fined or jailed for these apparent crimes. The case is a civil, class action suit, so victims may expect to be compensated, but if wrongdoers are not punished, if policies aren't changed, there is no confidence the system has been corrected.
