GOP to offer Trump a $200 million deal with the devil -- Don't take it, Donald!
FREE Catholic Classes
Conservative leaders want to make Donald Trump a $200 million offer he can't refuse. Who is pledging the money and who is organizing the effort is unclear. It is also unclear if the $200 million will be spent on Trump, or if it is merely there to threaten him. The offer comes following Trump's rise to the rank of presumptive nominee for the presidential race.

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Unidentified conservative leaders have amassed $200 million in pledged donations to convince Trump to refrain from reinventing the Republican Party. If the billionaire mogul, who has largely self-funded his campaign so far, refuses, they will spend the $200 on an insurgent movement intended to defeat him. It could come in the form of another candidate, or as covert support for Hillary Clinton.
There are several problems with this plan.
First, Trump is a billionaire, and $200 million isn't that much money to him. He could ignore the offer, which obviously comes with strings attached. Also, one of Trump's most attractive features is his relative financial independence from special interests. Accepting a $200 million contribution would undo all that. Finally, it's unclear Trump could be defeated by a $200 million independent campaign. Trump has proven to be very popular and his ratings continue to rise.
The Never Trump movement is real, and there are many self-labeled conservatives who will never support Trump. There are some who actually prefer Hillary Clinton!
However, most Republicans recognize that a Clinton presidency would merely extend the Clinton Crime Family's legacy for another four, or even eight years. As a result, most will fall in behind Trump regardless.
Most voters appreciate rump's outsider appeal, and prefer him because he is not a member of the established order. And those who try to drag him into the order may be viewed with suspicion by donors and voters alike.
The GOP establishment has carved a comfortable place for itself in the halls of Congress. Corruption is both rife and normal, and many futures depend on keeping the status quo. The problem is that Main Street Americans are being fleeced in the status quo, by both Democrats and Republicans alike.
The establishment fears Trump will reinvent the Republican party, making it more populist. The Republican party assumed its current form under Ronald Regan, who gathered a constellation of conservatives and libertarians around himself.
However, the policies that made Reagan so great aren't working so well in the present age. Economic and social conservatism is under attack. Republicans have proved to be as big spenders as Democrats, if not worse. And most Americans are weary of topics like abortion and illegal immigration. Many Republicans favor an increase in the minimum wage and want Social Security to remain solvent. These are distant positions from those staked out by Reagan and other conservatives and libertarians of the 80s.
Trump could reinvent the Republican party, making it more inclusive and tolerant of social and economic changes, while preserving its commitment to traditional values, strong defense, law and order, and individual responsibility.
Most Americans seem to want what Trump could deliver, and it's neither a conservative, nor a liberal position, but a moderate one. It's an important decision. The old, Reagan-worshiping GOP is dying. There's a movement on the left that bends towards socialism.
If the nation wants to avert such a hard turn to the left, it will have to concede on some ground, while holding a firm line on other. Trump, who is a dealmaker by trade, might be just the man to manage this. He could actually unite the country and usher in a period of prosperity.
We have a feeling someone will be left holding $200 million before long, and it won't be Donald Trump.
