LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - "I've said I would continue on as long as there was a viable path to victory; tonight I'm sorry to say it appears that path has been foreclosed," Cruz stated to his Indianapolis audience.
"We left it all on the field in Indiana. We gave it everything we've got but the voters chose another path. So with a heavy heart but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign."
With Cruz out of the race, and Trump towering over Ohio Gov. John Kasich in delegates, his Republican presidential candidacy is all but official.
Trump's victory speech included a comment on Cruz's campaign: "Just so you understand, Ted Cruz, I don't know if he likes me or if he doesn't like me, but he is one hell of a competitor. And he has got an amazing future.
"He's got an amazing future. So I want to congratulate Ted. I know how tough it is. ...He is one tough competitor. He is a smart tough guy. ... ...What Ted did is really a brave thing to do and a great thing to do because we want to bring unity to the Republican Party. We have to bring unity. ...it is a beautiful thing to watch, and a beautiful thing to behold. We are going to make America great again."
Now that one of Kasich's senior campaign advisors has announced the presidential hopeful will be suspending his campaign Trump's nomination is secure.
In the Democrat camp, Bernie Sanders beat Hillary Clinton by six delegates in Indiana, but remains just under 800 delegates behind the former First Lady.
With 1,163 candidates still on the table, Sanders can potentially win the nomination, but Clinton is currently only 181 delegates from the necessary 2,383.
Can Sanders beat Clinton? Will Trump stumble at the finish line?
Only time can tell.
