LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to the group's website, the protests will "demand a Congress that will take immediate action to end the corruption of big money in our politics and ensure free and fair elections in which every American has an equal voice."
The campaign is set to kick off on April 2 with a march from the Philadelphia Liberty Bell to Washington, D.C. Once gathered at the Capitol, Democracy Spring has planned a "powerful, peaceful, and massive sit-in that no one can ignore."
The site boasts over 2,000 pledges to take part in the march and hopes the sit-in, which is set to last from April 11 through the 18th, "will be one of the largest civil disobedience actions in a generation."Kai Newkirk, Democracy Spring's campaign director, told Breitbart 2,912 protesters pledged to risk arrest and are hailing from across the country.
"They are driving, taking buses, flying, because there are so many people from across the political spectrum that are just tired of the status quo of a democracy that works for the super rich and not for the everyday American," Newkirk continued. "They want to take this stand to say enough."
Democracy Spring's Facebook page has several updates on the upcoming protest, with their latest reading: "When people are willing to step up, put their bodies and their liberty on the line, to disrupt business as usual and make a stand... it forces those in power to have respond [sic]. The people have the power when we use it."Newkirk supported the update, saying, "if Congress doesn't respond to our demands and they would rather send people to jail, then it will be the largest civil disobedience of the century."
In preparation for what will surely conclude in several arrests, Democracy Spring stated it has already procured an unnamed lawyer "with decades of experience with civil disobedience cases."
The lawyer, who supposedly leads a team of pro-bono lawyers, has signed on to "provide legal counsel and representation for all participants who risk arrest as part of this campaign."
Though Democracy Spring has enlisted the help of a lawyer, Newkirk insisted, "We are committed to non-violence. That is the principle of our campaign."
