LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - Although the Sanders campaign claims they can win the Democratic nomination, the grim mathematics and the cold circumstances have already spelled his doom. Even if you refuse to look, the handwriting is still on the wall. Bernie Sanders can "win" every remaining state, and still lose the nomination for two reasons.
The first is that Democrats award their states proportionally. In order to catch up to Clinton in pledged delegates, he would have to win by 20-point margins. And the fact is, he will not "win" massive states like New York or California, which are staunchly pro-Clinton.
The second thing working against him is the fact that Clinton's allies are the ones counting the votes. Debbie Wasserman Shultz is the head of the Democratic National Committee, and she is also a staunch supporter of Hillary Rodham Clinton. In fact, many Democrats have called on her to resign because of her overt favoritism of Clinton.
If Clinton's closest allies are also counting the votes at the ballot boxes, then who's to say what is really going on?
It seems strange, given how Sanders' rallies can turn out tens of thousands of people, filling stadiums with more people than turn out to rock concerts, and yet Clinton, whose events are less well attended, keeps winning more votes.
Even the media seems in on the action, with declaring Sanders DOA as early as the Iowa Caucus.
Taken as omens, these signs reveal there is a powerful, pro-establishment undercurrent running against Sanders' campaign. So why does he continue to fight, insisting he can win when the deck is stacked against him?
The answer may be that he has a secret strategy. A plan so secret that even he distances himself from it. Bernie Sanders may by waiting for Hillary Clinton to be indicted over her email scandal.
It sounds like a stretch, especially given Sanders' repeated insistence that her emails are a non-issue. The socialist candidate continues to play nicely with Clinton, which is virtually unprecedented in a primary campaign.
Most politicians play to win, so the gloves come off during campaign season. As we've seen in the Republican primary, nothing is off limits. Not even discussion of one's physical anatomy is off the table.
Sanders may be playing nice because he genuinely thinks pro-establishment, felonious, Hillary Clinton is a friend and a likely candidate for president. Or, he could be playing nice because he has the nomination cinched.
Even Bernie Sanders' own supporters have criticized their candidate's seeming lack of a killer instinct as he lets Clinton skate through debates and refuses to land killing blows on her ties to Wall Street, pathological lies, and obvious crimes.
So what gives?
Sanders is waiting for the investigation into Hillary Clinton's email to finish. That's right. Rather than being "sick and tired of hearing about her damn emails," Sanders is relying on the investigation into her emails to conclude. The investigation is expected to end in April or May and it is expected to conclude that yes, Hillary Clinton did break the law.
The FBI could recommend charges when it comes out with its report. Those charges could be ignored, or brushed aside diplomatically by the Obama Administration, which is the most likely scenario, but they could also be taken seriously. If the Obama Administration agrees to prosecute Hillary Clinton, her presidential campaign could be ruined.
Even if the Obama Administration gives Clinton a pass, the court of public opinion might not be so generous.
In any case, it would become much more difficult for Clinton to win an election if she were facing charges.
But will enough Democrats see through her deception and accept the FBI's recommendation? That's highly unlikely. Yet as unlikely as that is, it is Sanders' best bet. The Democrats may decide that Clinton brings too much liability and that they stand a better chance voting for Bernie Sanders. Or, Clinton could be prosecuted, in which case the appropriate thing would be for her to drop out, leaving Sanders' path to the White House open. It would certainly give the American people a genuine presidential choice; the socialist bum (alleged) vs. the capitalist billionaire.
Sanders will never admit he's counting on this deus ex machina to become the nominee, but even his most ardent supporter must know it is over. Why stay in the campaign, spending millions of dollars on a race you cannot win?
Because you can't win if you don't play, and if Clinton is indicted, then Sanders needs to be in the arena, ready to go as the backup candidate.
Indeed, this is the only remaining logical motivation for Bernie Sanders.
