Was Obama right? Trump insists he'll win, but Cruz's numbers say otherwise

Donald Trump continues to claim he will become America's next president, but Ted Cruz's numbers have jumped enough to surpass the businessman, hinting toward the pattern current U.S. President Barack Obama previously suggested.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - "I continue to believe Mr. Trump will not be president," Obama announced. "The American people are pretty sensible, and I think they'll make a sensible choice in the end."

According to the latest polls, Cruz has taken the lead for the Republican party.

Despite his drop in the polls, Trump continues to stand firm in his belief the votes will come. "I will have more crossover votes - if I get the nomination, I will have more crossover votes than anybody that's ever run for office," Trump claimed on Wednesday during a town hall event on MSNBC.

"I will have Democrat votes. I will have independent votes. I will do tremendously with crossover. One other thing: I will have states that nobody ever thought of getting in terms of a Republican."

When asked to "name one" by co-host Hoe Scarborough, Trump replied he would take New York, has a "great chance" of obtaining Michigan, "definitely" Pennsylvania, Ohio and possibly Florida.
Unfortunately for Trump, the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, shows that Cruz surpassed Trump in a surprising twist.

Only last month Trump held a 13-point lead over Cruz, but the most recent poll revealed Cruz's lead by two percent.

"When you see a number this different, it means you might be right on top of a shift in the campaign. What you don't know yet is if the change is going to take place or if it is a momentary 'pause' before the numbers snap back into place," Republican pollster Bill McInturff stated.

McInturff added that the post-Saturday debate may give Republican voters pause, but that they would look a little closer at Trump, as they did in the summer. Following the summer lull, Trump "bounced back stronger."

Meanwhile, Cruz stood on stage at a town hall in South Carolina to announce, "For the first time in many months, there's a new national front runner on the Republican side."

Fred May, a Cruz backer, said Cruz's rise in the polls is not unexpected.

"I believe he's gonna be stronger as he goes to other states in the country," May stated. "He's just picking up speed. Momentum is building, and it's happening. There's a force there."

The poll was conducted following the South Carolina Republican debate; however, several have suggested that if pollsters "re-weighted" their numbers, Trump would have led by 1 percent.

Critics have also pointed out that the numbers reflect a single poll, and have since called for others to be administered.
