Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.

Immigration is a theme close to Pope Francis' heart

In what is expected to be controversial and remarkable at the same time, Pope Francis will pay a visit to the Mexico/United States border while visiting Mexico.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The pontiff is scheduled to stop between Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas during the final day of his trip. According to Fox News, he is expected to "give a blessing in honor of asylum-seekers on the other side and pray for those who died trying to get there."

"The pope always talks about migration problems all around the world, of the duties we have to solve these problems in a humane manner, of hosting those who come from other countries in search of a life of dignity and peace, stated Vatican Spokesman, Rev. Federico Lombardi in response to presidential candidate Donald Trump's disapproval of the pope's visit.

A prominent presidential platform for Trump has been immigration; he has vowed to build a wall along the entire border of Mexico, at Mexico's expense.

"I think Mexico got him to [visit the border] because Mexico wants to keep the border just the way it is because they're making a fortune and we're losing," Trump expressed, according to Fox Business Network. According to Trump, the Holy Father doesn't truly understand the "danger of the open border we have with Mexico."

However, during Pope Francis' historical visit to the United States in 2015, the pope took the time to discuss immigration, be it Syrian refugees or immigrants from Mexico, on more than one occasion and Trump's recent remarks are more than likely to have no effect on him.

"We, the people of this continent, are not fearful of foreigners, because most of us once were foreigners," he stated during his address to a joint meeting of Congress. "In a word, if we want security, let us give security; if we want life, let us give life; if we want opportunities, let us provide opportunities."
