Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.

Obama pushes for gun-control law banning the purchase of firearms by people on America's no-fly list.

In response to Wednesdays San Bernardino, California mass shooting, U.S. President Barack Obama has called for tighter gun-control laws, including a prohibition of firearm sales to people on America's no-fly list.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The New York Times reported more than one mass shooting, in which four or more people are wounded or dead, occurred every single day in the past year.

In reference to the most recent mass shooting, the President told CBS News, "We should never think that this is something that just happens in the ordinary course of events because it doesn't happen with the same frequency in other countries."
Obama admitted the federal government has yet to determine the reasons behind the San Bernardino massacre, but states: "My hope is that we're able to contain this particular shooting, and we don't yet know what the motives of the shooters are, but what we do know is that there are steps we can take to make Americans safer, and that we should come together in a bipartisan basis at every level of government to make these rare as opposed to normal.
"We have a pattern now of mass shootings in this country that has no parallel anywhere else in the world, and there are some steps we could take, not to eliminate every one of these mass-shootings, but to improve the odds that they don't happen as frequently - common-sense gun safety laws, stronger background checks."
One of his "common-sense" laws would be to suspend and eliminate all firearm sales to suspected terrorists on America's no-fly list, which would appear on the federally mandated background checks licensed dealers must perform.
Obama explained: "For those who are concerned about terrorism, some may be aware of the fact that we have a 'no fly list' where people can't get on planes. But those same people who we don't allow to fly could go into a store right now in the United States and buy a firearm, and there's nothing that we can do to stop them. That's a law that needs to be changed."
The National Rifle Association, paired with other advocates of the Second Amendment, argued that no-fly lists often contain names placed there by mistake, that people with the same name can be easily confused with those on the list and that terrorists are more likely to purchase their weapons illegally, rather than from dealers who must perform background checks.
Though Obama did not mention the possible drawbacks of his proposed gun-control laws, he did say: "I just want to say that we are all thinking about the current and ongoing tragedy in California today. Please keep the victims and the families in your prayers right now. Obviously, our hearts go out to the victims and the families."
