We ask you, urgently: don’t scroll past this

Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources—essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.

Where did the money go?

Each year Americans complain about paying taxes, much of which is distributed to foreign military aid. So where have all the funds gone?

Highlights

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to the United States government's Foreign Assistance report, $5.9 billion was directed to foreign military financing in 2014. Israel got $3.1 billion while Egypt was allotted $1.3 billion, which is nearly 75 percent of all the foreign military aid.

Cost-informant website howmuch.net has created a map to indicate just how much and where U.S. military aid was sent. The top five countries to receive foreign military financing last year were:

1. Israel: $3.1 billion

2. Egypt: $1.3 billion

3. Iraq: $300 million

4. Jordan: $300 million

5. Pakistan: $280 million

The regional distribution shows that the Middle East received 64 percent and Africa received 23 percent, which adds up to 87 percent of all U.S. foreign military financing.

In 2014, America spent $35 billion on foreign aid, with the Middle East appearing as the unsurprising dominant country to receive aid. The total amount of aid the top countries received is as follows:

1. Israel: $3.1 billion

2. Egypt: $1.5 billion

3. Afghanistan: $1.1 billion

4. Jordan: $1 billion

5. Pakistan: $933 million

To view the distribution of aid at a different angle, approximately 87 percent of the $5.9 billion was sent to two of five world regions, with Latin America and Europe tying for last place.

1. Middle East: 64%

2. Africa: 23%

3. Asia: 7%

4. General Programs: 4%

5. Europe: 1%

6. Latin America: 1%

Though Latin America received only 1 percent of foreign military financing, Colombia made the top 10 list with $28 million while the second highest recipient in South America was Mexico, with $7 million.

Though the 2015 allocation of funds will not be available until next year, the financial history and continuation of the Middle East conflict lead specialists to believe five countries will receive roughly 89 percent of U.S. financial aid while 69 other countries will share the remaining 11 percent.
